NIKOLAOS (KOOS) VAN DAM

 

Dr. Nikolaos van Dam (1945) studied Arabic and Political & Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam. He served as ambassador of the Netherlands to Iraq; Egypt; Turkey; Azerbaijan; Germany; Indonesia and Timor Leste (1988-2010) and also served as a diplomat in Libya (as Chargé d’Affaires a.i.), Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian Occupied Territories and Cyprus. In 2015 he was appointed as Ambassador and Special Envoy for Syria.

Dr. van Dam was the Dutch Ambassador in Indonesia from 2005-2010. During this period he devoted himself to the improvement of our bilateral relations and to deepening of the understanding between our two countries and peoples. Within that scope he visited all Indonesian provinces.

During his ambassadorship in Jakarta, Nikolaos van Dam was intensively engaged with the Indonesian language; dedicated himself to themes like Islam and democracy in Indonesia and published elaborately on these subjects.

Through INS Nikolaos van Dam commits himself to a better understanding and knowledge in the Netherlands of Indonesia, its history and its culture.
