Introducing Daliana Suryawinata: treasurer of the INS Indonesia Board

 

Daliana (born 1980) is a licensed architect with great interest in urban design and social housing, founder and director of SHAU -Suryawinata Heinzelmann Architecture & Urbanism- together with Dr. Florian Heinzelmann. SHAU works on multiple scales and typologies with a cultural-environmental agenda. Their work includes public spaces, vertical housing, visionary masterplans and microlibraries. Several key projects of SHAU include multi-programmatic public spaces in West Java with Governor Ridwan Kamil, ‘Muara Angke Fishing Village’ housing in Jakarta, Jakarta Jaya masterplan, ‘Film Park’, ‘Microlibraries’ and a performing arts center in Jakarta in the making. Among other awards, SHAU notably received an Archdaily Building of the Year Award 2021, Architizer A+ Awards in 2020 and 2017, INDE.Awards 2018 ‘Influencer’ category, World Architecture Festival’s WAFX award in Smart City category, Small Firm of the Year in Sustainable Architecture from the American Architecture Prize 2017, Silver Prize from Lafarge-Holcim Award Asia-Pacific 2017 and a shortlist of Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2019.

Daliana went to the Netherlands in 2003 for her postgraduate study at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. After her studies, she worked for OMA (Rem Koolhaas), MVRDV (Winy Maas), and West8 (Adriaan Geuze) on visionary masterplan and architecture projects in many countries including UK, Iraq and China. Daliana has taught Master courses at TU Delft, given public lectures worldwide and curated exhibitions. She was one of the juries for the New Capital of Indonesia Masterplan Concept Competition. In 2014 she held Kota Tua Creative Festival in Jakarta with several partners including former Minister Mari Pangestu, inviting architects and creativists from the Netherlands and Indonesia.

She is one of Architizer’s 100 Women to Watch in Architecture in 2021 and also Globe Asia’s 99 most inspiring women 2019. She is involved in the Indonesian Diaspora Network where she received an Innovation Award in 2012, founder of the Liveable Cities taskforce and a part of the Indonesian Diaspora Foundation.

Daliana’s encounter with INS started when she met Jesse Kuijper and later Joty ter Kulve. She is now part of the INS board in Indonesia.

Education:

Daliana holds a Master in Advanced Architecture of the Berlage Institute Rotterdam and a Bachelor of Science from the Tarumanagara University in Jakarta.

Daliana is finalizing her PhD-by-design project ‘Austeria: an Update to Redundant and Poor Cities’ at the Why Factory, a research group of the Delft University of Technology.

  • Co Founder of Kota Tua Creative Festival, Jakarta: a program of Creative Public Spaces aiming to revitalize Kota Tua Jakarta through creative industries and festivals.
  • Liveable Cities Taskforce Founder, Indonesian Diaspora Network: section of Indonesian Diaspora Network focusing in helping cities to become more interesting, developing with character, improving living qualities while preserving nature and culture. Five topics of interest: Affordable Housing and Urban Renewal, Integrated Water and Landscape Planning, Heritage & Conservation, Rural Development, Tourism and Empowerment, and Green Infrastructure.
  • Partner at SHAU: SHAU is an architecture and urbanism office in Rotterdam, Munich and Bandung. All three partners have extensive working experiences in well-established and internationally-recognized architecture firms. SHAU therefore offers a broad scope of services and is mostly interested in delivering design solutions while embedding societal as well as environmental concepts in the design process.
  • Chief Officer IAI-EU Indonesian Institute of Architects: IAI-EU bridges knowledge exchange and collaboration potentials between Indonesian and European architects. The network members consist of Indonesian architects residing in EU.
  • Freelancer architect and urban designer at West8, Rotterdam: West 8 is an award-winning international office for urban design and landscape architecture. Over the last 20 years West8 has established itself as a leading practice with an international team of 70 architects, urban designers, landscape architects and industrial engineers. It has branch offices in Belgium, New York and Toronto. West 8’s New York office was established after winning an international design competition for the design of Governors Island Park – a 172-acre island in the New York Harbor. West 8’s Toronto office primarily serves the local Waterfront Project.
  • Freelancer architect at MVRDV, Rotterdam: In close collaboration the three principal architect directors of MVRDV produce designs and studies in the fields of architecture, urbanism and landscape design. Early projects brought MVRDV to the attention of a wide field of clients and reached international acclaim. The grand variety of projects continues in the work of the office. The work of MVRDV is published and exhibited worldwide and received many international awards.
  • Architect at Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA): OMA is a leading international partnership, practicing architecture, urbanism and cultural analysis.
